As someone who has hired and fired quite a few sales people and interviewed more than I care to remember; I can tell you that finding good sales people, not to mention the right sales person for your company, is a painful process.
Sometimes hiring a very experienced sales person with a history of success can be problematic for your startup, whereas hiring a young gun with little experience might work better. A lot of this depends on the individuals but a lot also depends on you. Working with sales people is more like chess than checkers. Managing the personalities, strengths and weaknesses all contribute to the eventual success or failure of your sales hire. There are many different flavors of sales people… meat eaters, relationship managers, openers, closers, schmoozers, product focused, lone wolves, team sellers…..The difficult thing for startups is to determine what you need and when you need it.
